The test detects the presence of bile salts (sodium glycocholate, taurocholate) in urine.
Under normal conditions, bile salts are absent in urine because they are efficiently reabsorbed from the intestine and excreted in bile. Presence of bile salts in urine indicates cholestasis, obstruction of bile flow, or severe liver dysfunction. Hay’s Sulphur Powder Test is the common method to detect bile salt. Bile salts in urine indicate obstructive (Post-Hepatic) Jaundice, hepatocellular (Liver) Disease, Cholestasis.
